Whenever someone finds out that I am a paranormal investigator, one of the first questions I am asked is how can there be ghosts if the human spirit is
supposed to go either to heaven or to hell after the body dies?
My personal opinion is that the human spirit is the same after the body's death as it is when the body is alive. We have free will when the body is alive, so why should it be any different after death? I feel that some spirits stay because they are too scared of "what is on the other side", or they loose their direction. I mean seriously, we all know someone who gets turned around and gets lost whenever they are traveling, right? And for others, they may not even know they are dead, their death was so quick and unexpected, that their spirit didn't have time to realize what was going on, and they just got stuck here. And for those who have passed over, I think that God allows them to return to check on family members, friends and loved ones. When asked why I believe that, I just answer that I don't see Heaven as a prison, or God holding us there against our will if we want to go visit our kids, or grandkids or whoever.
